Summer Term Nature Walks

Infants and Juniors take part in a weekly or fortnightly Nature Walk designed to develop close observation, identification, and appreciation of local wildlife, plants, flowers, and trees. The Summer term is an especially rich time for these walks, as the landscape is alive with colour, growth, and activity. With easy access to the Cambridge University Botanic Garden and nearby fenland, pupils have regular opportunities to explore and grow familiar with their natural surroundings. Over time, these places become like “old friends” as children recognise familiar trees, leaves, insects, birds, and animals.

Pupils are also encouraged to collect interesting natural items such as leaves or twigs to bring back for the Nature Table. After each walk, they identify the objects they have found, and from Year 2 onwards, they also paint them in watercolour for inclusion in their Nature Notebooks. This careful, patient observation leaves a lasting impression on their learning.
