DEATH OF IONA SCLATER, A YEAR 11 PUPIL (2019-20)

12th August 2019

We are extremely sad to announce the death of Iona Sclater in a tragic horse riding accident yesterday, 11th August 2019.

Iona joined Heritage School at the start of Year 7 and was about to commence Year 11. She has two younger sisters in our Senior School.

Iona was a wonderful person from a close-knit family. She was a much loved and respected member of the school community. A highly motivated pupil, she was excelling academically. She was also a very talented rider who was making an enormous contribution to British Eventing. Her capacity to balance her school and social life with the pressure of training and competing at the highest level was exceptional. She will be missed terribly.

Iona’s sudden death will have a significant effect upon pupils in our Senior School. We will be offering pastoral support to all of our pupils in the coming weeks and as term gets underway in September.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Sclater family at this unimaginably difficult time.

Farewell to our 2019 Leavers

This year, there were amongst our Year 11 leavers, some of the first pupils to have gone all the way through Heritage, having starting in 2007, in Lower Prep, aged 4. Mrs Buchanan, as both a mother of one of these pupils, and a founding members of staff, recalls the Leavers’ Day as being particularly poignant. She writes :

‘The Service was a fitting tribute to the 14 pupils in our Year 11 class. Our Head Boy (William Buchanan) and Head Girl (Amy Robson) talked about each pupil in turn, picking out the qualities they valued in each individual. They thanked each teacher individually too for their hard word and unwavering support in the lead up to exams. It was clear to see that this small group of pupils had a great history of shared experiences and friendship.

Dr Martin then prayed for the pupils, thanking God for their time at Heritage, and asking for His blessing as they journey on to the next phase of their studies.

Mrs Pluke responded on behalf of the teachers with a poem she had written – something that is fast becoming a traditional highlight of the occasion. This year, each pupil was associated to a piece of physics apparatus and their character described accordingly, in rhyming verse!

It was then Mr Fletcher’s turn to give the Headmaster’s Address. He gave a history of the year group, right from the first day of Heritage, to the present day. Bradley, Olivia and William were remembered for having been there on day one, and all the other pupils who came and went were mentioned. He went on to describe each Leaver, talking about their character, strengths and future aspirations. His genuine care for every pupil was clear. He then concluded by sharing Plato’s allegory of the chariot and the dark and light coloured horses – challenging the leavers about which pull they would respond to in life?

The Service ended with a brilliant slide show by Mr Hulett, showing evidence of many happy times on camps, enrichment activities, music recitals and sporting events. The value of friendships formed through shared experiences was clear.

The Service was followed by an afternoon tea in the school playground, served by the new Head Boy, Head Girl and Prefect Team. More stories and thanks were shared, along with tea and prosecco! In the evening, the pupils had a ‘prom’ with barbeque, photo booth and Mr Appleyard’s famous disco.

Congratulations to the Year 11 Leavers’ of 2019. We wish you every success in your IGCSE results and in your future endeavors.’

Sports Day Triumph for Blue Pegasus!

Sports Day proved once again to be a fantastic day for the whole school.  It was so lovely to see the Juniors watching the Seniors field events with amazement and then, an hour later, to see the Seniors cheering on the Juniors in their relays.  (Special congratulations go to Year 3, for having the best change-overs of the day in any relay!) Everyone worked really hard for their houses, but also supported those from other teams.  I was also delighted that due to the demand for the Year 2-4 optional 400m we had to hold two races – it was great to see how much the pupils like competing!
Many congratulations to the Blue Pegasus house, who scored the most points on the day.  However the House Shield for all inter-house activities over the whole year was won by the Red Dragons! I’m sure the Yellow Phoenix and Green Griffin teams will come back stronger next year!
Our thanks to all the staff, parents and alumni  pupils who helped the smooth running of the day.  Mrs Eastwood

Super Physics 2019

A team of four physicists from Heritage took part in the ‘Year 9 Gifted and talented Inter-school competition: Super Physics 2019’,  part of the STEM East initiative and hosted by King Edward VI school in Bury St Edmunds.
It was the first time Heritage entered a team into this event – designed to encourage those interested in physics to consider pursuing a physics related career.  16 schools took part overall and Heritage came 3rd.  The team received the top mark for their poster design and did well in their presentations too.  Many congratulations!

Silver DofE Expedition in the Shropshire Hills

Our Year 11 Silver DofE participants completed their Silver qualifying expedition in the Shropshire Hills. Starting just south of Shrewsbury, they walked up and down over the Stiperstones, the Long Mynd, through Bishop’s Castle and along a portion of the Offa’s Dyke Path before finishing on the third day on the Welsh border. They covered about 50km over the three days. Many congratulations to the group for rising to the challenge and managing it so well!
