A New Lead for Heritage Forest School

Year 4 have been thoroughly enjoying Forest School this half term and it has been super to work with the new Forest School Teacher Miss Pidgeon during the last 2 sessions. She has a wealth of teaching experience both in the indoor and outdoor classroom.  In the first week Miss Pidgeon established a new ‘whittling circle’ where the children have been developing their skills including making some creative willow wands and splendid charcoal pencils.  Another highlight has been developing fire lighting skills. During the first session the children worked in groups of four to set up their own fire place, light a fire and toast some marshmallows.  These skills were essential during the torrential rain this week when one group managed to light a fire.  We are looking forward to more exciting opportunities with Miss Pidgeon.

Hunstanton Beach

Year 11 Geography pupils undertook three interesting and effective field work studies at Hunstanton beach.  They examined the beach profile, measuring samples of beach sediment (shape, weight and size), gradient and the geology of the cliffs.  They also conducted a coastal management study, where they compiled questionnaires and enjoyed interviewing tourists and residents, finding out about their views on the local sea defences.  The final study was on sand dunes. The students measured variables along a sand dune transect line, such as sand colour, PH, infiltration rate, gradient, vegetation abundance and species identification. From this they were able to see how the sand dunes changed with distance from the sea.    The trip, however was not all work.  pupils enjoyed a wonderful evening eating fish and chips on the beach, watching the most beautiful sunset and they even had a chilly dip in the sea!

Success for Heritage Triathletes!

Many congratulations to three Heritage pupils who competed in multi-sport events in Clacton last weekend.  Annabelle came 1st in the TriStart Duathlon (run/bike/run), Nathaniel was 2nd in the TriStar 3 Duathlon, and Maxwell was 1st competing with the adults in his first Sprint Triathlon (swim/bike/run).  Maxwell also set a new course record.  All three pupils successfully combine training with Cambridge Triathlon Club with their school sports.
(It was also a momentous occasion for Maxwell’s mother, our very own Bursar – Catriona Buchanan, who completed her first ever Sprint Triathlon.)

Strong IGCSE Results from Year 11

This year sees the fourth class of Year 11 Leavers – with 14 pupils –  complete their IGCSE and GCSE exams. Here are the results:

● 41% of all results were 9-8 (or A*).

● 63% of all results were awarded 9-7 (or A*-A).

● 80% of all results were awarded 9-6 (or A*-B)

● 93% of pupils obtained at least five 9-5 (A*-C) grades including English and Maths.

● 62% of all grades were above what standardised tests predicted to be ‘most likely’ – demonstrating that Heritage helps pupils exceed expectations.

● 2 pupils received 9 or more 9-8 (or A*) grades.

● 9 pupils were awarded at least one 9.

● All pupils achieved the grades they need to progress to their preferred post-16 school or college. Destinations include Hills Road Sixth Form College, Comberton Sixth Form, The Perse School, The Stephen Perse Foundation, and Cambridge Regional College.

Jason Fletcher, the Headmaster said:

“We want to congratulate all of our pupils, together with our dedicated staff for their hard work. There are some fantastic personal achievements hidden behind these statistics.

These results are only one step along the journey each of our pupils is making. We are very proud of them and wish them well as they move into their next chapter.”

Iona Sclater

DEATH OF IONA SCLATER, A YEAR 11 PUPIL (2019-20)

12th August 2019

We are extremely sad to announce the death of Iona Sclater in a tragic horse riding accident yesterday, 11th August 2019.

Iona joined Heritage School at the start of Year 7 and was about to commence Year 11. She has two younger sisters in our Senior School.

Iona was a wonderful person from a close-knit family. She was a much loved and respected member of the school community. A highly motivated pupil, she was excelling academically. She was also a very talented rider who was making an enormous contribution to British Eventing. Her capacity to balance her school and social life with the pressure of training and competing at the highest level was exceptional. She will be missed terribly.

Iona’s sudden death will have a significant effect upon pupils in our Senior School. We will be offering pastoral support to all of our pupils in the coming weeks and as term gets underway in September.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Sclater family at this unimaginably difficult time.
